The Chairman of the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP), Benny Wenda has welcomed the overwhelming support by key members of the Pacific Islands Forum Foreign Ministers meeting that highlighted the outstanding invitation by Indonesia and called for a mission to West Papua (Papua) by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ms Michelle Bachelet.
“I welcome the support by Pacific Island Forum members to Vanuatu’s call that resolved in the Ministers meeting to strongly encourage both Indonesia and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to finalise the timing of the visit and make every endeavour to provide a report on the situation before the next Pacific Islands Forum Leaders meeting in Port Vila, Vanuatu in 2020,” Mr Wenda said.
The Chairman of ULMWP calls on all Pacific Leaders attending the upcoming 13 to 16 August 2019 Funafuti, Tuvalu Pacific Islands Forum Leaders meeting to recall the Forum vision and values that reflects Blue Pacific as a region of peace, harmony, security, social inclusion and prosperity where all Pacific people can lead free healthy and productive lives.
Mr Wenda also acknowledges the continued prayers and support from Civil Society networks particularly churches and civil society organisations that have continued to provide support to Leaders and Government regarding the human rights issues of West Papua.
The ULMWP Chairman wishes all Pacific Leaders, Delegates and the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat a most successful week of deliberations at the Funafuti Tuvalu Forum meeting.
